Interested in becoming a Freemason in Henley-on-Thames? Temple Island Lodge No. 8031 welcomes enquiries from men who would like to discover the friendships, traditions and charitable work of Freemasonry. You do not need to know an existing member or wait to be invited. Your first step can simply be a friendly conversation.
Arrange an informal chat about joining. Ask your questions, find out what membership involves and decide whether you would like to explore it further. There is no obligation to apply.

Why choose Temple Island Lodge?
Friendship is central to lodge life. Meetings bring us together for ceremonies, conversation and a meal afterwards, known as the festive board. Temple Island has a tradition of themed dinners and social occasions: our archive of lodge evenings gives a flavour of what we enjoy.
There is also the opportunity to learn, take part in ceremonies, support good causes and develop confidence at your own pace. Explore what Temple Island is about and our charitable work.
Where and when do we meet?
We meet at Henley Masonic Centre, 61 Reading Road, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire RG9 1AB. If you live or work in Henley, South Oxfordshire or the nearby Berkshire and Buckinghamshire area, ask us whether our location and meeting pattern would suit you.
Our six regular meetings are on the first Wednesday of February, April, May, November and December, with Installation on the last Wednesday in September. Please check arrangements with the secretary before planning a visit. Social occasions and rehearsals are discussed separately; family and work commitments come first.
Who can join Temple Island Lodge?
Temple Island is a men’s lodge under the United Grand Lodge of England. Applicants should be aged 18 or over, of good character and able to affirm a belief in a Supreme Being. People from different backgrounds and faiths can become Freemasons.
Membership involves a commitment to personal development, consideration for others and charitable service. You should be able to meet the financial and time commitments comfortably, without putting pressure on your family or other responsibilities. Membership should not be sought for business, financial or preferential advantage.
You can read the official UGLE guidance on joining, or ask our secretary to talk you through what it means in practice.
Questions about becoming a Freemason
Can I join without knowing a Freemason?
Yes. You can contact Temple Island Lodge directly even if you do not know anyone here. You do not have to wait for a personal invitation to ask about joining.
What happens after I enquire?
Start by telling the secretary that you are interested, where you are based and what you would like to know. Ask to arrange an informal conversation with a member. If you decide you would like to take things further, the secretary can explain the application process and help you get to know the lodge.
How much does it cost to join?
Ask us for the current joining fees, annual subscription and dining costs, so you can understand the full commitment before deciding. Charitable giving should always be within your means. We will be happy to discuss the practical questions with you.
How much time would I need?
There are six regular lodge meetings a year. Time spent learning ceremonies, rehearsing or attending social occasions depends on your involvement. Talk to us about what you can manage alongside family and work before making a decision.
Do I have to follow a particular religion?
You need to be able to affirm a belief in a Supreme Being, but you do not need to belong to a particular religion or be an active churchgoer. Freemasonry itself is not a religion.
Can I ask questions before deciding to join?
Absolutely. An enquiry is a chance to find out about the people, activities, costs and expectations. You are welcome to take time to decide whether Freemasonry and Temple Island Lodge are right for you.
What about women interested in Freemasonry?
Women have their own Masonic organisations. Our guide to women’s Freemasonry links to the two women’s Grand Lodges.
