Friendship and a Relaxed Dinner at Leander Club, Henley

Friendship was at the heart of our evening on Wednesday 4 November, as members of Temple Island Lodge followed our meeting in Henley-on-Thames with a pint at The Duck and a relaxed dinner at Leander Club.

A return to The Duck — or the Duke!

Our first stop brought back happy memories. The last time we had visited as a group was for the lodge’s 60th anniversary dinner, when The Duck was still known as the Duke. It was lovely to return, share a pint and enjoy a catch-up before heading on to dinner.

Dinner at Leander Club in Henley

In one of Leander Club’s private function rooms, we enjoyed pea soup, a delicious chicken main course and crumble, accompanied by wine, beer and plenty of laughter.

Without the usual round of speeches, there was time for conversations to wander and for members to get to know one another better. Everyone could relax, speak freely and feel at home. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening in good company.

Founded in 1818, Leander Club has a distinguished place in British rowing, with generations of its athletes achieving Olympic and Paralympic success. Its Henley setting made a fitting backdrop to an evening celebrating our own local friendships.

Temple Island on Leander’s walls

A painting hanging at Leander caught our eye: Temple Island during a regatta, with its distinctive temple overlooking the river and a lively gathering of boats and spectators. For members of a lodge bearing the island’s name, it was a particularly pleasing connection between our evening’s venue and Henley’s riverside heritage.

Good company is what matters

A traditional festive board has its pleasures, but this evening was a reminder that friendship needs little ceremony. Good food, laughter and the chance to talk openly can be every bit as memorable.

That sense of belonging is an important part of Freemasonry in Henley-on-Thames and of life at Temple Island Lodge. If you would like to find out about joining Temple Island Lodge, we would be pleased to hear from you.

Curious about Freemasonry in Henley? Start with a conversation

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to join a Masonic lodge in Henley-on-Thames, the easiest place to start is a conversation. You do not need to arrive with all the answers, know an existing member or be ready to make a decision.

That is one reason for this new Temple Island Lodge blog. Alongside reports from meetings, we will share reflections on lodge life, friendship, charitable work and the questions people ask about Freemasonry. The aim is to give you a clearer sense of the people and experiences behind the name.

There is more to a lodge evening than the ceremony

Formal meetings are part of Freemasonry, but so are the conversations around them. A shared meal afterwards, known as the festive board, gives members and visitors time to talk, exchange news and enjoy one another’s company.

Temple Island has enjoyed themed dinners inspired by different countries and cuisines. Our archive of past evenings offers a taste of that tradition. Future posts here will add to the picture, with space for meeting reports and other matters of interest.

Finding the right lodge for you

Choosing a lodge is a personal decision. The meeting days, location and commitment need to fit your life, and it helps to get to know the people you would be joining. It is sensible to ask about subscriptions, meals, learning and the time involved before deciding.

Temple Island meets at Henley Masonic Centre on Reading Road. Our six regular meetings are spread across the year, with social occasions and rehearsals considered separately. Our secretary can explain the current arrangements and talk through your questions.

Curiosity is a good enough starting point

Perhaps you are interested in the history and traditions. Perhaps you would like to make friends outside work, take part in something different or contribute to charitable causes. You can ask what Freemasonry involves and find out whether its values and activities appeal to you.

An initial enquiry is simply an opportunity to learn more. You can discuss what you are looking for, hear about Temple Island and decide whether you would like to take things further.
